Event Details

Join us On Monday June 12th at 4:30pm for a community walk! We will be meeting at Foreman’s Park where our June resident Antonia Malchik will give a short discussion on her work in understanding and writing about community. Antonia will discuss her research on the evolution of walking and how it strengthens both personal health and community. After the discussion we will walk up to the Granite Mountain Memorial and back to Foreman’s park. This will be an opportunity to talk with Antonia about her research and have a casual stroll with your fellow community members.

Here’s a blurb from Antonia on this topic and gathering:

“Community” is often presented as an abstract concept, but true community rich in social capital and interpersonal interactions has always been essential to human survival and the evolution of human societies. In her first book, A Walking Life, Antonia Malchik explored the evolution of walking, how it strengthens our physical and mental health, and its role in building community, neighborliness, and social change. Her recent work has begun looking at how communities themselves build resilience, part of which is exploring narratives and identities. What stories can communities tell about themselves, and how?

Bringing together those in the community is a cornerstone of Dear Butte’s mission statement. We strive to gain more insight of those around us and feel this short community walk will give some clarity on how we can be better at one of our core missions.
